II. GRAMMAR:

1. Simple Sentences

A simple sentence is one independent clause that has a subject and a verb and expresses a complete thought. Notice that there are some important requirements for a simple sentence:

2. Compound sentences

A compound sentence has at least two independent clauses that have related ideas. The independent clauses can be joined by a coordinating conjunction (there are seven–for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so) or a semicolon.

Compound Sentences with Coordinating Conjunctions

She did not cheat on the test, for it was not the right thing khổng lồ do.

Compound Sentences with a Semicolon

Joe made the sugar cookies; Susan decorated them.

The sky is clear; the stars are twinkling.

The waves were crashing on the shore; it was a lovely sight.

Note : In formal language , conjunctive adverbs “ however , nevertheless, moreover, therefore, otherwise go after a semi colon (;)and before a comma ( ,)

S+V; however / nevertheless/ moreover/ therefore/ otherwise, S+V

3. Complex sentences:

- A complex sentence contains an independent clause and at least one dependent clause. When a complex sentence joins an independent & a dependent clause together, they can go in either order.

- A dependent clause begins with a subordinate such as:

+ When : khi

+ While : trong khi

+ Because : vì vì

+ Although/ though/ even though : mang dù

+ If: nếu.

In each example, the independent clause is underlined.

Because my coffee was too cold I heated it in the microwave.

Though he was very rich, he was still unhappy.

She returned the computer after she noticed it was damaged.

When the cost goes up, customers buy less clothing.

As she was bright and ambitious she became a manager in no time.
